QMedCONNECT Newsletter: March 2010

---

Dear friends,

We had a very exciting March 2010. I learnt about UnLtd India - an organization that funds and supports social entrepreneurs. I applied for their program and went through a four day residential "boot camp" which was an awesome learning experience. Based on this, I made a presentation about how I would like to take QMedKF to new heights with my team, and I am delighted to share that I have been chosen as one of their "investees" for a period of an year.

This month I also conducted four training programs, three in Mumbai and one in Bhopal. My presentation got the highest rating in a program conducted in KEM Hospital Mumbai, as part of a Clinical Research workshop.

We have made some changes in our offerings of memberships etc and we are now eagerly looking forward to taking QMedKF to new heights with support from UnLtd. India

Article of the Month

Bala A, Gupta BM.

Mapping of Indian neuroscience research: A scientometric analysis of research output during 1999-2008.

Neurol India 2010;58:35-41

The authors trace the growth of Neurosciences as a field in India over a decade, and seek to establish if there is a related growth in research output in the field. Using the Scopus citation database for 10 years as a source, they attempt to find out if there is a research productivity linked to the papers published and also if there is significant impact due to such published research. They have also studied the "global publication share" of these citations. They conclude that India is far behind other emerging economies in almost all parameters and express the urgent need to substantially increase research activities in their field in India. We from QMedKF would add that this is applicable to all fields, not just Neurosciences!

What we did – March 2010

Participation in a Boot camp

UnLtd India - www.unltdindia.org - is a Mumbai based organization that supports social entrepreneurs who have ideas and skills to create a better world. Recently Vasumathi Sriganesh applied for their incubation support program and was selected to attend a four day residential boot camp which prepared all potential investees, to create a good plan to elevate their respective ideas / organizations. There were around 30 participants with excellent ideas, at the camp. UnLtd India helped them interact with each other and also got them to meet successful social entrepreneurs, who shared their stories of successes and challenges. Participants also had talks and one to one sessions with expert mentors from the corporate as well as social sectors. At the end of the camp, each participant got help and advice for creating a powerful 10 minute "pitch" to present before an external evaluator. The Boot Camp was one of the best things that happened for us; as Vasumathi felt that the learning she gained was tremendous.

As a sequel to this, Vasumathi presented her pitch in the following week, and we just got the news that she has been selected as an investee. QMedKF will as a result, get a year's support through various contacts and experts to elevate itself to much higher levels!
