QMedCONNECT Newsletter: August 2013

---

Dear friends

As promised last month, we are back with our monthly newsletter, and as we mentioned earlier, you will now not only get a gist of what we have done, but will also get links to blog posts where more details of events will be available for you. August, for us was a month dedicated to fund raising efforts. We worked very hard on getting our page on “Global Giving” in order. Communications on such portals demand precision (with excellent reasons) and we are very happy that such a demand for precision made us put in our best. Please take a few moments to read about our Global Giving project below and then do go to the website for details. We’d be really happy if you could share that link with friends / relatives in the US, recommend us and ask for contributions. The other event is one where you could walk or run for us through Footsteps4good. Again, we provide details below and hope there will be many interested in taking part.

We have decided to hold workshops definitely once every month from now and of course are wanting institutions to invite us to do them at their premises too. Our Reference Management workshop this month was a lovely event and we have just announced the next PubMed workshop too in September. We are working towards frequent workshops, E-Learning resources and more, in the coming months. I also got invited to deliver 4 lectures this month and am hoping that get more such opportunities very often.

Fund Raising Initiatives

  1. Global Giving is an International online fund raising platform which provides NGOs a platform to list their projects and enables donors to contribute to a project of their choice. We are all geared up to participate in their September “Open Challenge” event where we need to raise over $5000 from 40 unique donors. We have set a target of raising $75000. If we clear the Open Challenge, we will be listed on the Global Giving website for two years during which time we can post new projects and continue raising funds for the same. Our Project “Helping Medical Students Become Better Doctors” (Click to view) aims to conduct Literature Search Workshops for under-graduate students so that the learn these skills early enough to make it a part of their professional routine.  Once the Challenge begins in September there will be different donation options ranging from $10 to $1000 and people can make their contributions. We hope that listing our project on global giving will provide an opportunity for QMed’s supporters living outside India, who always wanted to contribute but could not due to the logistical constraints.
  2. Footsteps4Good is an initiative for NGOs to participate in a Marathon organized in Mumbai that is held on the 2nd of October every year. This year QMed is participating for the first time. We already have five supporters – Dr Bhavin Jankharia, Dr Amit Dang, Mr Rajeev Surana, Ms Varsha Ramdas and Mr P Sriganesh who have made their contributions and are going to represent QMed at the event. We are sure you will support us by participating in the event. After all, we are doing it for YOU!

Some good news to share

The Elsevier Foundation based in the US announces an “Innovative Libraries for Developing Countries” Grant Program, every year. This year QMed has got through the preliminary level of  selection and is sending out the proposal for the second level  by Sept 3, 2013. Do wish us the best, so that we can plan some special programs! If we win this grant, we will be doing programs on Searching the Cochrane Library along with an International Expert, in five zones in India.

By participating in each of the above mentioned events, we hope to raise a substantial amount to help medical students and health professionals learn from us . This will help them deliver better healthcare for the Health of the People.
