QMedCONNECT: Highlights of November 2020

From our Founder's Desk

Welcome to our November issue!

We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new free course - Introduction to Referencing! Do check out www.qmedcourses.in
This course is useful for those beginning any medical writing work and also for those who mentor people who embark on medical writing. Do check out the course

This month I am happy to share that we had a great experience with an undergraduate student - Devang Gohil from Baroda Medical College. Based on our learning scheme for UG students, he enrolled and finished all three courses within a month, submitting all assessment questions in one attempt. He scored 100% in the first two courses and 92% in the third. However he pointed out errors in a couple of our videos and also pointed out ambiguities in questions where he missed a few marks. We have corrected all these, and as a gesture of appreciation and gratitude we awarded him the Rs 1000/- prize, which is as a rule giving only to those scoring 100% in all three. The eye for detail that he showed, and the effort he made to discuss these with us and to help us reframe the questions, were very admirable! We are delighted to have been able to reward him for his learning.

Two more UG students also qualified for prizes - they are Saloni Dedhia a student of Physiotherapy at KEM, Mumbai and Srinidhi Prabhu - a student of MBBS in the Bangalore Medical College. Both of them win Rs 500/- each

Evidence Based Medicine Practice and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Students

Evidence Based Medicine Practice and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Students

Philbrick AM, Hager KD, Lounsbery JL, Moon JY, Pereira C, Undeberg MR, Westberg SM, Reidt S.
Am J Pharm Educ. 2019 Oct;83(8):7299. doi: 10.5688/ajpe7299. PMID: 31831906; PMCID: PMC6900823.

Researchers form University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, USA conducted a study to design, implement, and assess the use of “educational prescriptions (Education Rx)” assignments among Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students in advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) in ambulatory care. And also, they assessed the impact of these assignments on students’ self-efficacy to practice Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). Indeed, it is a very interesting and practical study conducted by the researchers to impart the EBM skills among the PharmD Interns, the future Clinical Pharmacists.

QMed thanks Dr Krishna Undela, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, NIPER, Guwahati for this brief review

Getting ready a generation of students who are better prepared for their PG thesis

Getting ready a generation of students who are better prepared for their PG thesis

Approximately about a decade ago when we started teaching literature searching, I used to say that this should be taught to all PG students. A niece of mine - who had just started her BDS, one day told me that we should seriously consider starting at the UG level. She emphasized - "When we start our PG program, we start seeing patients. We want to be practitioners. And our days are filled. As for medical graduates it is probably even more hectic for them. You teach UG students - they are at the learning stage - and will absorb anything relevant to medicine / dentistry and related topics."

As the years went by, we had several opportunities to teach UG students - at various UG conferences and more. And my niece was right. UG students just lapped up our teaching and loved learning. And yet - when I spoke about this to faculty and practitioners, some agreed and some felt that the UG stage was too early.
