July has been a busy month. We participated in an International fundraising campaign and raised around $3000. That sounds good. But we put in much efforts, we were pretty organized in planning emails and reminders and were full of expectations of raising more than $5000. Secretly we were hoping to even touch $10,000 ! That did not happen. Post the campaign, we have done a "post mortem" and noted what all we may need to improve upon in the future. Do read more about this interesting experience in our blog post.

I also delivered two lectures this month. From one of them, I would like to share some interesting analysis of the quiz we imparted. One of the questions was about their knowledge about "MeSH Terms" in searching. The use of MeSH is really vital especially if one wants to find the most relevant results
|
Out of 23 who filled in the form:
|
- 16 mentioned that they learnt it during the lecture
- 4 mentioned that they had learnt it from me earlier
- 3 mentioned that they had learnt it from other sources
Sixteen individuals having learnt about MeSH only after completing medical degrees is not a great sign. (In fact the other seven may also have learnt it later - I am not sure about that)
|
It was similar for knowledge about Boolean operators. Applying these incorrectly, can play havoc with results. And we still often observe that people make mistakes with these.
|
- 16/23 said that 80% or more of what they learnt was new for them.
- 21/23 wished they had learnt these skills in their UG days.
- 13/23 felt it should be introduced in the UG curriculum and 10/23 felt that it should be in the PG curriculum
I still wonder - when we prove this in almost every lecture and workshop, why the National Medical Commission, the Dental Council of India and other related bodies do not take this seriously. Why do the same participants not work together and make an appeal. Why do institutions not ensure that everyone learns from QMed's most convenient ELearning plaform?

"Who will bell the cat?" - is the question that seems to be coming up!

The challenges of fundraising
|
Raising funds to run a not for profit organization is a challenge. Sounds pretty obvious? Okay - maybe if you are an expert fundraiser you may disagree, but that applies to experts. Who may have fundraising abilities in their blood , or developed them over years. Over the years, my colleague and I have learnt several things about how to …
